This little unit embodies everything we love about
USB gadgets; it's cheap, it's superfluous and it's a cool idea.The
USB Vacuum is designed for sucking out the flotsam and jetsam that inevitably accumulates between the keys of your average geek's keyboard. We're talking a stinky cocktail of dandruff, dust and skanky muffin crumbs that would make any hygienist weep. It comes with two head attachments, a thin rubber sucker attachment and a more complicated brush and triple sucker combo. A blue/white led light is built into the underside of the unit and sheds a bright but slightly off-centre glow over the area being vacuumed. While you are hoovering away like a nerdy version of Alice from the Brady Bunch, there is a small springy push button behind the light that provides extra oomph to the internal fan when pressed and beefs up the sound to boot. The crusty payload is collected on a cloth membrane that sits over the fan and is emptied by twisting off the front of the unit and brushing off the debris.
Now if you hold it like it looks like you should, your hand is completely in the way of the led and the finger that rests on the power button is that most ineffectual of digits, the pinky. This isn't the only problem. The fan sucks like an elderly asthmatic gnat with lung cancer. It really seems to struggle to pick up obvious visible crap but it must be doing something as the membrane had a collection of dust and garbage after 15 minutes or so of vacuuming. Maybe it's just filtering the air or something, but that's an achievement in itself. The main problem with something like this is the measly 4.5-5 volts max that can be pulled out of the
USB port - not really enough to generate serious sucking power. All in all, the
USB Vacuum is a cool addition to any total geekboy's arsenal and at a low price is not going to hurt the backpocket.
